The incident involving uncontrolled gas on the drilling deck in May 2010 can be traced back to 30 April the same year. On that date, a gas kick occurred in well 34/10-C-6 — a clear indication of unstable well pressure.

The warning that the well barriers were not functioning was ignored, resulting in an acute situation 19 days later.

The gas blowout caused Gullfaks C to remain shut down until 14 July 2010.

The blowout also revealed a number of procedural failures and safety deficiencies. These many challenges are documented in the article series “Code Red”. Start with Part 1: “The Gas Leak”.
