Production on Visund A began on 21 April 1999. The oil and gas are processed on the platform, after which the oil is sent to Gullfaks A and the gas to Kvitebjørn.

Production from Vigdis began on 28 January 1997. The oil is processed on Snorre A before being sent to Gullfaks A, where it is stored pending transport. The gas is reinjected into the Snorre field.

Production on Snorre A began on 3 August 1992. Oil from Snorre is sent to Gullfaks A, while the gas is reinjected into the reservoir.

What can you do to boost daily output and extend an oil field’s life? One option is a small device called a permanently installed downhole pressure and temperature gauge.

The Gullfaks field is one of the Norwegian continental shelf’s most complex and productive oil and gas fields, characterized by a large number of wells. At the beginning of 2025, a total of 539 wells had been registered, a result of the field’s challenging geology, the need for pressure support, ambitions for high recovery rates, the field’s long operational life, and the tie-in of several satellite fields.

By the summer of 2015, supplies from Florø and Ågotnes had ended. From then on, all supplies to Gullfaks would be shipped from Mongstad.

Several companies and shipping lines have been involved in moving oil - both from the Gullfaks field in particular and on the Norwegian Continental Shelf more broadly.

Everything sent to and from the Gullfaks Field has to pass through the supply base at Mongstad. Supply vessels are loaded with whatever the Gullfaks installations and other fields need—whether it is something that has sat on the shelves for years or goods that have just passed through the base gate.

For several decades, shuttle tankers have been coming to the Gullfaks field to “tap” it for oil. As oil production has declined, the route has become longer.

In the summer of 2015, the world’s first subsea wet gas compression station was installed on the seabed near Gullfaks C. This marked another step toward realizing the ambitious “subsea factory” project.

Drones are used in a wide range of applications, from hobbyists taking vacation photos or videos, to infrastructure inspection in industry or modern warfare. Drones can also be used to transport items offshore.

Contracts related to the Gullfaks development were characterised by a high share of Norwegian companies—and a low number of bids per contract. Why was that the case?

Hywind Tampen is situated in an area where there may be recoverable oil and gas resources. If a discovery is made in the area, the involved parties are required to engage in constructive dialogue to find a solution.

The 11 turbines at Hywind Tampen were a welcome political milestone, and the opening ceremony at August 23. 2023 marked a major step toward Norway’s ambitions to become an offshore wind nation. Significant political prestige has been invested in the country’s offshore wind development.
