The Gullfaks field was the first fully Norwegian-owned oil field, and the first field for which Statoil (now Equinor) was the operator from the beginning. Gullfaks has been developed with three oil platforms (A, B, and C). From the very start, the platforms have also served as receivers for subsea production.

Oil companies on the Norwegian Continental Shelf are not taxed based on what they actually sell their oil for, but rather on the Petroleum Price Board’s estimate of what the oil from each field could reasonably have sold for. These reference price estimates provide a useful indicator of the quality of Gullfaks crude.

Fields delivering to Gullfaks
Oil from the Gullfaks field is loaded onto tankers, while gas is sent into Statpipe and onward to Kårstø. Most of the oil and gas exported from Gullfaks today comes from surrounding fields in the Tampen area: Gullfaks Sør, Snorre, Vigdis, Tordis, Visund, Visund Sør, and Brime (which comprises Gimle and Sindre).
