About 100 people were ordered into the lifeboats when a gas leak occurred in December 2010. For more than two hours, they sat strapped into the lifeboats waiting for the situation to improve.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate concluded in its investigation that if the gas had ignited, it would have had life-threatening consequences for the personnel.

The incident on Gullfaks B can be seen in connection with other accidents and near-misses that affected the Gullfaks field and Statoil in 2010, including a serious gas leak on Gullfaks C.

The incidents and their consequences are documented in the article series “Code Red”. The article about the gas leak on Gullfaks B is the third instalment, Statoil failed the test”.
