In early February 1983, Statoil director Arve Johnsen had the honor of laying the cornerstone for Gullfaks A. The cornerstone ceremony symbolized the official start of construction for the first platform on the Gullfaks field.

The first phase in what must be described as the marathon of platform construction, was the building of the platform’s storage cells. The next phase was the construction of the shafts that the steel deck would rest on. In parallel with the construction of the substructure, the steel deck and all modules were built, before the two parts came together and were ready to be transported out to the field.

The cornerstone of Gullfaks A was the first piece in a construction period that would span nearly seven years, concluding with the start of production on Gullfaks C in December 1989.
